THE WALL in asisi Panorama Berlin

It is a personal view of the era of divided Berlin, artistically and masterfully condensed. Yadegar Asisi’s THE WALL reflects the feel and routine of everyday life in the 1980s in the shadows of the Berlin Wall. The Panorama presents the perfect illusion of Berlin’s history – at a point in time when the Wall had long since become a part of everyday life for people. Asisi himself grew up as a witness to the Berlin Wall, and with THE WALL, he has condensed his own experiences into atmospheric snapshots. Experience daily life – outside of the tragic experiences – in the shadow of the Wall at the asisi Panorama Berlin during your trip to the city.

Experience Berlin

While you immerse yourself in the history of the capital at the asisi Panorama Berlin, modern life continues to rage on the streets. Let yourself be carried away by the flair of the capital during your short getaway and experience the highlights of the metropolis while sightseeing. Be sure to visit tourist attractions such as:

  • The Brandenburg Gate
  • The Reichstag
  • Alexanderplatz and the Fernsehturm
  • Museum Island
  • The East Side Gallery

Shoppers can also get their money’s worth in Berlin – for example Kurfürstendamm or Friedrichsstraße. And for those who want to get back to nature, there are plenty of parks and gardens to enjoy, where you can go for a stroll, picnic and just while away the hours.

Panorama Berlin – THE WALL

A typical autumn day in Berlin’s Kreuzberg neighbourhood in the 1980s: This death strip splits the West from the East, the Federal Republic from the GDR and capitalism from communism. Asisi’s 60 metre-long and 15-metre-high panorama THE WALL shows people going about their everyday lives – people moving home or grabbing a snack, children playing, tourists visiting the Wall. But also border guards in their watchtowers, observing life across this death strip in the West. Accompanied by music from Yadegar Asisi and Eric Babak, the panorama THE WALL shows the normalcy of this divided city through interwoven scenes and situations in the 1980s. The diffuse lighting and original quotes from East and West German politicians lend themselves to the remarkable ambience.

In the project, over 100 photos from witnesses will introduce you to the era of the Berlin Wall and its demise. You will then be offered a realistic 1:1 view of Berlin Mitte from Kreuzberg from a 4-metre-high visitor platform. Your asisi Panorama Berlin experience will be rounded off with the film “On Both Sides of the Wall”: Here, Yadegar describes his perspective of the partition as well as his life in the GDR, the Federal Republic and his adopted home Kreuzberg as the foundation for creating the panorama THE WALL.

The exceptional artist Yadegar Asisi

Born in Vienna, Yadegar Asisi – known for his pilot project EVEREST – has been creating the world’s largest panoramas since 2003. He has lived in Berlin since 1979 and has succeeded in bringing the historical panorama of the 19th century into the digital age. With his works, he narrows the gap between photography and painting. His impressive panoramas cover a spectrum of themes, such as cityscapes, natural landscapes and historical moments in contemporary history, and invite viewers to immerse themselves in other worlds and to simply let their emotions be carried away by the fantastic power of imagery.

I lived next to and with the Wall in Kreuzberg in the 1980s. The panorama combines a part of my experiences into many scenes and details.“ –Yadegar Asisi
